Shopify eCard Widget Setup Guide
The eCardWidget Shopify app lets you add eCards at different points throughout the customer journey—from product pages and the cart to post-purchase experiences. You can also send automatic thank-you eCards or embed a standalone eCard form anywhere on your store.
This guide walks you through the available options and how to set them up on your Shopify store.
How to Try Out the Live Demo
Visit the eCardWidget Demo Store (Password: ecard) to explore the different ways eCards can be used throughout a Shopify store.
1. Product Page eCard Form
Turn an eCard into a product by replacing the standard Add to Cart experience with an eCard personalization form.
2. Product Page Add-on
Customers can add an eCard alongside a product, personalize it, and include it with their purchase.
3. Cart Page eCard
Customers can add and personalize an eCard directly from their cart before completing their purchase.
4. Thank-you Page eCard
After checkout, customers can choose, personalize, and send an eCard from the Thank You page.
5. Automatic Thank-you eCard
Automatically send a branded eCard to customers after they purchase or after their order ships.
6. Standalone eCard Form
Embed a standalone eCard form on a Shopify page so visitors can send eCards without purchasing a product. The form can also accept payments through Stripe for paid eCards.
Initial Setup Steps
Complete these steps once before setting up how you'd like to use eCards on your Shopify store.
Step 1: Install and Connect eCardWidget
Go to Shopify's Apps section.
Search for eCardWidget and install the app.
Click Continue to eCardWidget and log in to connect your Shopify store.
Step 2: Enable eCardWidget on Your Storefront
Enable the eCardWidget app embed in your Shopify theme so eCardWidget can appear on your product pages. This is a one-time setup for each theme.
In eCardWidget, go to Shopify Settings.
Under Enable eCardWidget on your storefront, click Open theme editor.
The Shopify theme editor will open with eCardWidget selected under App embeds.
Make sure eCardWidget is switched on.
Click Save in the top-right corner of the theme editor.
You can also enable the app embed manually by going to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds → eCardWidget.
Note: If you publish a different Shopify theme later, you'll need to enable the eCardWidget app embed for the new theme as well.
Step 3: Create Your First eCard
In your eCardWidget dashboard, open Widget Form.
Add an eCard.
Upload your own image or choose from our existing templates.
Customize your eCard by adding body text, editing the email subject, and adding your branding.
Save your eCard and preview the final design.
Once your eCard is ready, continue to the setup option below that matches how you'd like customers to use eCards on your Shopify store
Watch the initial setup walkthrough below:
Ways to Use eCardWidget with Shopify
Option 1: Product Page eCard Form
The Product Page eCard Form lets customers personalize an eCard directly from a Shopify product page before completing their purchase. The eCard form replaces the standard Add to Cart experience for the configured product.
This option is ideal if you want to sell eCards as individual products in your Shopify store. Each Shopify product can be paired with an eCard or widget, allowing customers to personalize their eCard before purchasing it.
Before you begin: Make sure you've completed the Initial Setup Steps above, including enabling the eCardWidget app embed for your current Shopify theme.
Setup Steps
In your eCardWidget account, go to Shopify Settings → Product Pages.
Find and select the Shopify product you want to configure.
Under Product Pages, choose the product first then choose the eCard or widget you want to attach.
Select Product Page Form as the placement option.
Click Save to apply your changes.
Once setup is complete, customers can choose an eCard design, enter the recipient's details, and add their message directly from the Shopify product page. They can then proceed through checkout, and the eCard will be sent automatically once the order is completed.
Watch the setup walkthrough below:
Troubleshooting: The eCard Form Is Not Showing on My Product Page
If the eCard form does not appear on your product page, make sure the eCardWidget app embed is enabled for your currently published Shopify theme.
Go to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, switch on eCardWidget, then click Save.
If you've recently published a different theme, you'll need to enable the eCardWidget app embed for that theme as well.
Option 2: Product Page Add-on
The Product Page Add-on lets customers add a personalized eCard alongside another product in your Shopify store. An eCard option appears below the Add to Cart button, allowing customers to include a personalized card with their purchase.
This option is ideal if you're selling a physical or digital product and want to offer an eCard as an optional add-on. Unlike the Product Page eCard Form, the standard Add to Cart button remains available.
Under Settings for [Product], choose the eCard or widget you want to attach.
Select Add-on Checkbox as the placement option.
Click Save to apply your changes.
You can attach additional eCards or widgets to the product if you'd like to give customers multiple eCard designs to choose from.
Watch the setup walkthrough below:
Note: Product Page Form and Add-on Checkbox cannot be enabled at the same time for the same design. Product Page Form replaces the Add to Cart button, while Add-on Checkbox keeps the standard Add to Cart experience.
You can also enable the Thank You Page eCard Form alongside the Add-on Checkbox if you'd like to give customers the option to send an eCard after checkout.
Once setup is complete, customers can choose to add an eCard from the product page, select a design, enter their message and recipient details, and continue with their purchase as usual.
Option 3: Cart Page eCard
Let your customers add a free personalized eCard to their order directly from the Shopify cart before checkout.
When enabled, an Add an eCard to this order option appears in the cart. If the customer selects it, they can choose an eCard design, enter the sender and recipient details, write a personal message, and add the eCard to their order before proceeding to checkout.
This option is ideal if you want to offer an eCard with any order, rather than attaching the eCard experience to specific products.
Before you begin: Make sure you've completed the Initial Setup Steps above, including enabling the eCardWidget app embed for your current Shopify theme.
Setup Steps
In your eCardWidget account, go to Shopify Settings → Cart Page.
Switch Cart eCard option on.
Under Designs shoppers can choose from, select the eCard or widget you'd like to make available. You can add multiple eCards or widgets to give customers more designs to choose from.
Under When the eCard is sent, choose when the recipient should receive the eCard:
Right away, once the order is placed
When the order ships
Let the shopper choose
If you select Let the shopper choose, choose whether Right away or When the order ships should be pre-selected for the customer.
Click Save changes.
Watch the setup walkthrough below:
Once enabled, customers will see the eCard option in their cart. Selecting it opens the eCard form, where they can choose a design and personalize the card before continuing to checkout.
Note: If you add a widget, all eCards within that widget become available for customers to choose from.
Option 4: Thank-you Page eCard
The Thank-you Page eCard lets customers choose, personalize, and send an eCard after completing their purchase. A link to the eCard form appears on the Shopify Thank You and Order Status pages so that customers can send their card after checkout.
This option is ideal if you want customers to complete their purchase first and personalize their eCard afterward.
Setup Steps
1. Enable the Thank-you Page eCard for a Product
In your eCardWidget account, go to Shopify Settings → Product Pages.
Find and select the Shopify product you want to configure.
Under Settings for [Product], choose the eCard or widget you want to attach.
Enable Thank You Page eCard Form.
Click Save to apply your changes.
2. Add the eCard Form to Your Shopify Thank You Page
You only need to complete this Shopify setup once.
Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Checkout.
Under Configurations, click Edit.
3. Open the Apps tab.
4. Find the eCard Share Form component.
5. Add it to both the Thank You and Order Status pages.
6. Save your changes.
Watch the setup walkthrough below:
Once enabled, customers will see an option to access their eCards after completing checkout. They can click Proceed to eCards, choose a design, personalize their eCard, and send it to their recipient.
Limit the Number of eCards Customers Can Send
You can optionally limit the number of eCards a customer can send based on the quantity of eligible products they purchased.
No Quantity Limit
Customers can send eCards without a quantity-based limit after checkout.
Limit by Quantity
Customers can send one eCard for each eligible item purchased. For example, if a customer purchases two eligible items, they can send up to two eCards.
Option 5: Automatic Thank-you eCard
The Automatic Thank-you eCard lets you automatically send a branded thank-you eCard to customers after they place an order—no action required from the customer.
Use this option to thank customers for their purchase, share a personalized message such as “Thank you for supporting our business,” and create a more personal post-purchase experience.
Setup Steps
In your eCardWidget account, go to Shopify Settings → After Purchase.
Under Automatic thank-you eCard from you, switch Automatic eCard on.
Under eCard designs to send from, select the eCard or widget you want to use. You can add multiple eCards or widgets to create a pool of available designs.
Enter the sender name you want displayed on the eCard, such as your store or business name.
Choose when the eCard should be sent:
After payment
After the order ships
Set an optional delay in days. Enter 0 to send the eCard right away after the selected trigger.
Choose how often customers should receive an automatic eCard:
Every order
First order only (once per customer)
Add an optional personal message to appear on the card.
Click Save changes.
Watch the setup walkthrough below:
Once enabled, eCardWidget automatically sends the thank-you eCard based on the timing and frequency you've selected. There is nothing additional for the customer to do.
If you've selected multiple eCards or a widget, eCardWidget will automatically choose a design from the available selection for each order.
Note: Automatic thank-you eCards count toward your monthly eCard sending limit.
Option 6: Standalone eCard Form
The Standalone eCard Form lets visitors send eCards directly from a page on your Shopify store, independent of the Shopify checkout process. Customers don't need to purchase a Shopify product to send an eCard.
This option is ideal if you want to create a dedicated eCard page or gallery where visitors can choose, personalize, and send eCards directly.
View a live example (Password: ecard)
Setup Steps
In your eCardWidget dashboard, open the Widget Editor and go to the Share tab.
Copy the eCard Form embed code.
In Shopify, open the page where you want the eCard form to appear.
In the Shopify content editor, open the HTML editor (
<>) and paste the embed code.Save your changes and view the page to confirm that the eCard form appears correctly.
Once embedded, visitors can choose an eCard, personalize their message, and send it directly from the page without going through Shopify checkout.
Charging for Standalone eCards
If you'd like to charge visitors for sending eCards through the standalone form, you can enable eCardWidget's built-in Stripe-powered eCommerce form to offer fixed-rate or multiple-choice pricing.
Text & Languages
Customize the text customers see throughout the eCard experience on your Shopify store.
Under Shopify Settings > Text & languages, you can customize headings, descriptions, button labels, and other messaging shown across the Product page, Cart page, Thank-you page, and eCard sending experience.
By default, eCardWidget provides built-in text for each supported language. Enable Custom text to replace the default messaging with your own branding and copy. Leave any field blank to use eCardWidget's built-in wording.
Adding another language
Click Add language to customize your messaging for another supported language. Each language has its own set of text fields, so changes made in one language will not affect the others.
Customers will see the text for the language their store is currently using, with English used as the fallback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can customers send eCards to multiple recipients?
A: It depends on how the eCard is configured. Product Page and Cart Page eCards are personalized for a recipient as part of the purchase flow. For Thank-you Page eCards, you can allow unlimited sending or limit the number of eCards customers can send based on the quantity of eligible products purchased.
Q: Can I offer more than one eCard design?
A: Yes. You can attach individual eCards or an entire widget to give customers multiple designs to choose from. For Automatic Thank-you eCards, adding multiple eCards or a widget creates a pool of designs that eCardWidget can choose from automatically.
Q: What's the difference between Product Page Form and Product Page Add-on?
A: Use Product Page Form when the eCard itself is the product you're selling. It replaces the standard Add to Cart experience with the eCard personalization form.
Use Product Page Add-on when you want customers to optionally include an eCard alongside another product. The standard Add to Cart experience remains available.
Q: Can I offer an eCard both before and after checkout?
A: Yes. For example, the Product Page Add-on can be enabled alongside the Thank You Page eCard Form, allowing customers to add an eCard before checkout or access the eCard experience after their purchase.
Q: Can I offer an eCard with any order instead of attaching it to individual products?
A: Yes. Enable the Cart Page eCard to give customers the option to add and personalize an eCard directly from their cart before checkout.
Q: Can I automatically send customers a thank-you eCard after they purchase?
A: Yes. The Automatic Thank-you eCard can automatically send a branded eCard to customers after payment or after their order ships. You can customize the sender name, message, timing, delay, frequency, and available eCard designs.
Q: How does the email limit in my eCardWidget plan work?
A: The email limit refers to the number of emails sent through eCardWidget, rather than the number of eCards or Shopify products sold.
Q: Can I add an eCard form to a Shopify page without tying it to a product or checkout?
A: Yes. Use the Standalone eCard Form to embed an eCardWidget form directly on a Shopify page. Visitors can then choose, personalize, and send eCards without purchasing a Shopify product.
Q: Can I charge customers for eCards sent through a standalone form?
A: Yes. You can use eCardWidget's built-in Stripe-powered eCommerce form to offer paid eCards with fixed-rate or multiple-choice pricing.
Q: Is there a live Shopify demo available?
A: Yes. Visit the eCardWidget Demo Store (Password: ecard) to explore the different eCard experiences.
With eCardWidget connected to your Shopify store, you can offer eCards throughout the customer journey—from product pages and the cart to post-purchase experiences and standalone eCard forms.
